The artist book “Naiserakud / Hermitesses” is a review of women’s representations in magazines published in Estonia in the last century. The artist’s book follows the format of the women’s magazine and is exhibited in the reading corner designed for the TASE graduation exhibition on the second floor of the EKA building. The publication contains
48 pages and 23 digital collages using photographs from women’s and fashion magazines published in Estonia in three different periods of the last century: Maret (1935–1940); Vallatu Magasin (1936–1940);
Soviet Woman (1952-89); Silhouette (1958–1992) and Stiil (1991–2009). The aim of the collages is to compare women’s representations and thus look at the differences and similarities of body ideals in different time periods.
In addition to collages, the publication also contains titles of body-themed articles in magazines, which clearly
show the expectations placed on a woman’s appearance – to stay slim and thus desirable.
